Major investments transform Gothenburg RoRo terminal

Gothenburg RoRo Terminal has undergone extensive development over the past three years, with a series of infrastructure upgrades delivering a modernised, more efficient and sustainable operation serving frequent sailings to key freight hubs in the UK and Central Europe.

Cargo volumes handled over the quay increased five percent in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year, reflecting the positive impact of the investment programme.

The terminal handles a broad mix of cargo including food, forest products, steel, electronics and automotive and engineering components.

Its development coincides with growing intra-European shipping demand driven by geopolitical uncertainty, tariff disputes and global supply chain disruptions, prompting companies to seek regional, predictable transport solutions with frequent connections to European freight hubs.

RoRo and short sea shipping are also increasingly valued as relief for congested inland transport corridors.

The completed upgrades span nine areas. In 2024, 144,000 square metres of new terminal space were completed in the outer port area, the largest expansion since the terminal opened in the late 1970s.

In 2023, Gothenburg RoRo Terminal took over operation of Arken Intermodal Terminal, adding 65,000 square metres and seven rail tracks enabling direct trailer transfers between trains and vessels.

A cross-docking facility of 11,000 square metres for steel products was constructed in 2025, complemented by a 6,000 square metre covered cross-docking facility for forest products completed in 2024.

The approach channel was widened and deepened during the 2022 to 2023 dredging season, enabling larger vessels and removing certain weather-related restrictions. Shipping lines CLdN and DFDS have deployed larger, more modern vessels on routes serving the terminal.

Berth 710 was upgraded in 2026 with an extended quay projection and new ramp to increase loading capacity for larger vessels.

A green hydrogen refuelling station was established adjacent to the terminal in 2024 serving both hydrogen-powered trucks and terminal vehicles. The eastern quay is also set to be upgraded to accommodate larger, more modern vessels.

Jacob Minnhagen, Senior Market Development Manager at the Port of Gothenburg, described the terminal as having a genuine 2.0 feel following the rapid pace of development.

Maria Franksen, CEO of Gothenburg RoRo Terminal, described the volume growth as a positive indication that the long-term, focused approach to developing capacity, quality and efficiency is paying off, while expressing commitment to continued improvement to meet the current and future needs of Swedish industry.
