Maersk will introduce a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for cargo moving from East Africa to five European markets.
The surcharge will take effect from 17 September 2026 and will amount to US$500 per container.
Capacity constraints drive new surcharge
Maersk said the PSS is being introduced amid prevailing market conditions and capacity constraints affecting trade into North Europe.
The surcharge covers shipments from Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
Destination markets are Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland.
| Equipment | PSS |
|---|---|
| 20-foot dry | US$500 |
| 40-foot dry | US$500 |
| 40-foot high cube dry | US$500 |
The effective price calculation date is 17 September 2026.
According to Maersk, the PSS forms part of the applicable ocean freight charges. It will be collected according to the freight payment terms of each shipment.
Other contractual, local and contingency charges may also apply.
