Maersk introduces and updates surcharges for Australia and New Zealand trade

Maersk has announced three separate tariff updates affecting cargo movements to and from Australia and New Zealand, effective from June and July 2026.

Port Additional surcharges for both export and import cargo at Port Chalmers, New Zealand, will take effect from July 1, 2026.

The rates apply to all container types in New Zealand dollars, with 20-foot units charged at NZ$ 35 and 40-foot and 45-foot units at NZ$ 70, applicable to both outbound and inbound cargo movements between Port Chalmers and all world origins and destinations.

The Equipment Positioning Service Export charge for inland containers from Australia and New Zealand via Tauranga and Brisbane to world destinations is being revised upward.

For Tauranga, the rate increases from NZ$ 105 to NZ$ 130 per unit. For Brisbane, the rate increases from AUD 205 to AU$ 225 per unit. For non-regulated countries the effective date is June 1, 2026, and for regulated countries June 28, 2026.

The corresponding Equipment Positioning Service Import charge for cargo moving from world origins via Tauranga to New Zealand and via Brisbane to Australia is subject to the same rate revisions.

Tauranga increases from NZ$ 105 to NZ$ 130 per unit, and Brisbane from AU$ 205 to AU$ 225 per unit, with the same effective dates applying as for the export charge.
