Lloyd's Register drives future-ready maritime solutions at Posidonia 2026

Classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has leveraged the global stage of the Posidonia 2026 exhibition to unveil a comprehensive suite of digital, technical, and sustainability initiatives. Responding to the mounting commercial and regulatory complexities faced by modern shipowners, LR announced major newbuild advisory frameworks, digital notation approvals, and cross-industry partnerships targeting decarbonization and automation.

Newbuild advisory service launched to combat market complexity

To help shipowners navigate a rapidly changing regulatory landscape, alternative fuel paths, and changing shipyard dynamics, LR officially launched its Newbuild Advisory Service alongside an updated New Construction Guide.

  • Upfront decision support: Drawing from data across more than 500 newbuilding projects, the advisory service assists operators and investors during the earliest planning stages to optimize costs, schedules, and asset lifecycle quality.

  • North Asian yard benchmarking: The updated New Construction Guide consolidates data on capabilities, strengths, and available orderbook timelines across primary North Asian shipyards into a singular tool, aiding owners as shipyard selection becomes more technically complex.

Advancing autonomous and hybrid vessel design with South Korean partners

In a series of joint development projects (JDPs) and agreements signed with South Korean heavyweights, LR took steps toward bringing next-generation vessel concepts to commercial reality:

  • Pragmatic autonomous systems: LR joined forces with SK Shipping and multiple HD Hyundai Group entities (including HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering [KSOE], HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Marine Solution, and Avikus) to create a certifiable framework for semi-autonomous vessels. Aligned with the IMO’s developing MASS Code, the project bypasses fully unmanned concepts to prioritize transitional designs. It focuses specifically on automated deck handling, system integration, digitally enabled machinery maintenance, and unmanned bridge operations.

  • Hybrid electric LNG propulsion: Partnering with KSOE and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), LR signed a JDP to develop a 185,000 cbm LNG carrier equipped with a hybrid electric propulsion system. The initiative aims to evaluate battery integration, system architecture, and redundancy philosophy to establish formalized technical requirements for large-scale electric propulsion.

Digital bridge systems and expanded shipyard collaborations

The collaboration with Asian shipyards extended further into digital navigation safety and specialized vessel capabilities:

  • Container loading vision system: LR awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Hyundai Samho for a container ship design standard engineered to meet NAV1 compliance. The technology utilizes a remote camera system to create an uninterrupted 360-degree digital field of view. This design allows operators to bypass traditional bridge visibility constraints, safely enabling higher container stack heights and maximized cargo capacity without violating wheelhouse sightline standards.

  • Broadening Korean partnerships: Beyond automation, LR granted an AiP to DH Shipbuilding for an 88,000 cubic meter dual-fuel very large gas carrier (VLGC) and partnered with them on a Suezmax tanker design utilizing a passive air lubrication system (ALS). Additional MoUs signed include a 22,000 cubic meter LNG bunker vessel with K Shipbuilding, a floating data center design with Samsung Heavy Industries and Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corp, and a wind-assisted 50,000 dwt MR tanker concept.

Andriaki Shipping aligns with global ESG reporting standards

Transitioning from technical innovations to corporate accountability, LR announced a successful collaboration with Greek shipowner Andriaki Shipping to prepare and publish its latest environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosures.

LR structured Andriaki’s 2023 and 2024 ESG reports to align with internationally recognized frameworks, specifically the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB). The advisory scope involved extensive industry benchmarking, stakeholder consultations, materiality assessments, and mapping core corporate activities against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The resulting reports provide a standardized data baseline, improving data transparency and internal governance structures as market scrutiny on maritime sustainability intensifies.
