BNSF launches RELOAD program to increase empty container utilization

BNSF Railway has launched RELOAD, a new program designed to improve empty container utilization and support westbound domestic cargo movements.

The company said the solution targets ocean carriers and intermodal carriers seeking more efficient equipment use.

The program allows imported containers to carry U.S. domestic cargo to the West Coast before returning overseas.

BNSF said the approach improves equipment balance and increases container availability across its network.

The company added that RELOAD gives customers access to empty containers across multiple locations.

The program also aims to lower shipping costs and improve supply chain efficiency.

“Our RELOAD program is an innovative, strategic way for our ocean carriers to market their capacity,” said Jon Gabriel, Group Vice President of Consumer Products at BNSF.

He said the program provides more flexibility for customers and producers while creating more sustainable logistics solutions.

Gabriel added that the initiative expands capacity options for commodities better suited for 20-foot and 40-foot containers.

IMC Logistics said the new system improves operational visibility and equipment planning.

“The BNSF RELOAD program has streamlined how we secure box supply, manage billing, and track containers,” said Mason George, President of National Accounts at IMC Logistics.

He said the program improves container availability and strengthens domestic repositioning efforts.

BNSF said RELOAD builds on its existing Matchback program, which pairs empty import containers with export commodities such as grain and agricultural cargo.

The company expects the new solution to improve efficiency while supporting stronger container repositioning across North America.
