Matthias Altendorf

Lloyd’s Register Group and Lloyd’s Register Foundation have appointed Matthias Altendorf as the new chair of their boards.

Altendorf will succeed Thomas Thune Andersen, who will step down at the end of his tenure in June 2027.

Altendorf brings extensive leadership experience from the engineering and technology sectors. He spent nearly four decades with the Swiss-based Endress+Hauser Group and served as CEO from 2014 to 2023. He later became chair of the company’s Supervisory Board.

He began his career as a toolmaking apprentice and progressed to lead the global engineering business. During his tenure, he championed digitalisation and connected technologies across industries, including shipbuilding and offshore energy.

Altendorf also founded Bionic Leadership, a company focused on human-centred management and leadership development.

Nick Brown, CEO of Lloyd’s Register, welcomed the appointment and highlighted Altendorf’s global leadership experience and industry expertise.

Brown said Altendorf’s experience will support Lloyd’s Register as it continues to evolve its services to meet the changing needs of the maritime industry.

Altendorf said he was honoured by the appointment and the trust placed in him by the organisation.

He noted that Lloyd’s Register has supported maritime safety for more than 260 years through technical expertise, independent assurance and innovation.

Altendorf added that he looks forward to helping build on that legacy while supporting the organisation’s mission and future development.
