K Shipbuilding, Sejin Heavy Industries and ClassNK have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a new-generation eco LPG carrier.
The three companies signed the agreement during Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The project will focus on a 9,000 m³ LPG carrier designed to comply with forthcoming amendments to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk.
Project prepares for amended IGC Code
The International Maritime Organization is expected to adopt the amended IGC Code during the 112th session of the Maritime Safety Committee in December 2026.
The revised requirements are scheduled to enter into force on 1 July 2028.
Under the agreement, K Shipbuilding will develop the vessel design. Sejin Heavy Industries will develop the cargo tank design using wide-plate bending technology.
ClassNK will review the proposed design against the amended IGC Code requirements.
Energy-saving technologies included
The vessel will feature energy-saving devices designed to improve its operational and propulsion efficiency.
These technologies will include a rudder bulb and an energy-saving fin. The partners expect the equipment to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
The companies said the collaboration would support the implementation of the amended IGC Code and contribute to the safe maritime transportation of liquefied gases.
