Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), the largest container port in India, has attained 35.38% growth by handling 3,179,367 TEU from April until October of this fiscal year compared to 2,348,436 TEU in the same period of last fiscal year.
The port trust, comprising five terminals, also incurred a 12.56% growth in container handling in October compared to the same month in the previous year. This October, JNPT handled 476,316 TEU, increased by around 50,000 TEU from October 2020.
Additionally, the port handled 6.25 million tonnes of cargoes this October, compared to 5.73 million tonnes in October last year, registering a 9.18% growth.
In October, 110,792 TEU were handled at Nhava Sheva International Gateway Terminal (NSIGT), 80,869 TEU at Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT), 91,219 TEU at Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Private Limited (BMCT), 153,847 TEU at Gateway Terminals India Pvt. Ltd. (GTIPL), and 39,589 TEU at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal (JNPCT).
The NSIGT again crossed the 100,000 TEU mark, the second time in a row, achieving its highest ever handled since its inception.
The JNPT handled 82,996 TEU of Inland Container Depots traffic this October, the port data shows. In the month the port trust handled 163 vessels.
By handling such a large volume of boxes, JNPT won the ‘Best Port of the Year (Containerized)’ award at the 5th India Maritime Summit recently.
The premier container handling port of India, located at Navi Mumbai, is accounting for around 50% of the total containerised cargo volume across the major ports of the country.
