Iran demands end to naval blockade in talks with US

Iran has outlined new conditions for any future agreement with the United States, including the removal of the naval blockade and the lifting of sanctions.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Qaribabadi presented Tehran’s position during a briefing to the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.

According to committee spokesperson Ebrahim Rezaei, Iran insists that any deal must include an end to military operations across West Asia, the withdrawal of US forces from areas surrounding Iran, the removal of the naval blockade and the release of Iranian assets.

Qaribabadi also said Tehran has already submitted a new proposal to Washington through Pakistan but has not yet received an official response.

The Iranian official claimed the United States requested both the ceasefire and negotiations following the recent conflict.

Members of the parliamentary commission urged Iran’s negotiating team to maintain what they described as the country’s “victorious position” and warned against trusting Washington due to its withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Lawmakers also called for the continuation of Iran’s role in managing the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest tensions follow the conflict that erupted in late February between Iran, the United States and Israel.

Iran responded with Operation True Promise 4, launching missile and drone strikes against US military bases in West Asia and Israeli targets.

A Pakistan-mediated ceasefire later halted the fighting after 40 days, but negotiations between Tehran and Washington failed to produce an agreement.

Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain high as Washington continues to reference restrictions on Iranian ports, which Tehran describes as illegal under international law.
