Inmarsat Maritime and South Korean telecommunications provider SK telink have signed an agreement to expand the adoption of NexusWave across South Korea’s shipping industry.
The agreement strengthens the companies’ collaboration on maritime digitalisation. It covers the implementation of NexusWave aboard car carriers, container ships, very large crude carriers and other vessel types.
South Korean shipping companies covered by the agreement include HMM and Sinokor.
Supporting maritime digitalisation
Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat company, and SK telink established their strategic relationship in 2007.
The partners will combine Inmarsat Maritime’s global network, maritime expertise and managed service model with SK telink’s presence and customer relationships in South Korea.
NexusWave supports cloud-based applications, remote technical assistance, cybersecurity strategies, vessel performance optimisation and crew connectivity.
The service can also manage the availability of individual network underlays according to local regulatory requirements. This capability aims to maintain connectivity through the bonded service for vessels operating across Asia.
In addition, Inmarsat Maritime plans to integrate the ViaSat-3 service into NexusWave. The integration is designed to increase performance, capacity and flexibility across major maritime routes.
“Connectivity has become fundamental to the safe, efficient and competitive operation of a modern fleet. Shipping companies need a resilient digital platform that can support operational applications, cybersecurity requirements and the expectations of today’s seafarers,” said Shin-Yong Lee, Head of the Satellite Business Division at SK telink.
“NexusWave is designed to support these needs, and we are excited to bring its advanced capabilities to more South Korean operators, helping them unlock greater value from connected, data-driven operations,” he added.
“South Korea continues to set the pace for innovation in global shipping, with operators embracing technologies that enhance performance, resilience and competitiveness,” said Justin Yi, Regional Director for Asia-Pacific at Inmarsat Maritime.
“This agreement reflects both the strength of our long-standing relationship with SK telink and growing momentum behind the digitalisation of maritime operations. Together, we are helping create the connectivity foundations that will enable South Korean shipowners to realise the full benefits of a connected and increasingly data-driven future,” he concluded.
