Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and Hamburger Energiewerke (HEnW) are joining forces to spearhead the decarbonisation efforts in the Port of Hamburg.
Their collaborative venture, “Erneuerbare Hafenenergie Hamburg GmbH,” aims to enhance the presence of renewable energies like photovoltaics and wind power within the German port while developing innovative renewable energy solutions. The new company will operate as an equal partnership, leveraging both entities’ distinct expertise and capabilities.
“Having intensively promoted shore-side power supply in recent years, we would also like to play an active role in the expansion of renewable energy generation in the port area. With Hamburger Energiewerke, we have a strong partner at our side here,” stated Friedrich Stuhrmann, managing director of HPA, which is responsible for managing and developing harbour areas.
HEnW brings vital experience in planning, constructing, and operating renewable energy plants and boasts energy industry expertise and actively participates in the electricity market.
The initial phase involves conducting feasibility studies for specific projects with a combined potential of approximately 70 megawatts. Simultaneously, ongoing evaluations explore additional areas for expansion within the harbour.
“This unique cooperation between the municipal companies Hamburger Energiewerke and HPA will drive forward the decarbonization of the port. A large proportion of the electricity requirements of the port industry, the HPA and the port companies will now be covered by renewable energies such as wind power and PV systems in the medium term,” said Jens Kerstan, senator for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture.
The establishment of the company is scheduled for spring this year, contingent on a favourable audit outcome aligned with state budget regulations. Future ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) and wind power facilities will predominantly provide green harbour electricity to HPA and local port entities. HEnW will oversee the operation of these plants, managing the generated renewable electricity and distributing it to the consumers.
