Fincantieri is accelerating the use of artificial intelligence and robotics across its shipyards through its BOOST² innovation programme. The initiative includes planned investments of nearly €100 million to improve shipbuilding efficiency, safety and production processes.
The Italian shipbuilding group launched BOOST² – The Shipyard of the Future three years ago. Since then, more than 450 employees across 13 shipyards have taken part in the programme, including teams in Italy, Romania and the United States.
Fincantieri presented its latest progress at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard on 13 October. The demonstrations included technologies already in use, systems undergoing testing and solutions being developed for future operations.
Bringing AI and robotics into shipbuilding
The programme focuses on moving new technologies from testing into regular shipyard operations.
One of its main areas is Physical AI, which allows intelligent systems to interact with machinery and their surroundings. Fincantieri is also developing collaborative robots to support workers during complex production tasks.
Other technologies include digital twins, which create digital models of shipyard assets and processes, and smart supply chain systems designed to improve production planning and coordination.
The company is also exploring additive manufacturing and automated industrial equipment.
To support these developments, Fincantieri works with technology companies, startups and research partners. The aim is to adapt new solutions to shipbuilding requirements before introducing them across more facilities.
Expanding technology across the shipyard network
Fincantieri is now focusing on wider adoption of technologies that have already shown promising results.
“The next frontier of industrial competitiveness is bringing artificial intelligence into the physical world, integrating it with robotics and the expertise embedded in our manufacturing operations,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Fincantieri.
The company plans to continue testing new applications while expanding the use of existing systems. It also aims to strengthen cooperation between engineering, production and technology teams.
Through BOOST², Fincantieri is seeking to make automation and digital technologies a regular part of its shipbuilding operations.
