Fatal assault claims four lives at Greek shipping firm offices

Reports indicate that a tragic incident unfolded at a Greek shipping company located in the southern Athens suburb of Glyfada on Monday, 12 February 2024.

Four individuals lost their lives in an attack by a man, identified as a former employee of the company.

The targeted company, European Navigation, boasts nearly fifty years of involvement in the Greek shipping sector, with a notable focus on tankers.

The gunman, identified as a 70-year-old, allegedly faced termination from his position at the firm, according to local media. After claiming the lives of three employees, he took his own life.

Authorities swiftly responded to the incident, deploying members of the elite counterterrorism unit of greek police EKAM, along with fire engines and ambulances. Police cordoned off a wider area surrounding the building as they dealt with the situation, which escalated rapidly.

The incident, which unfolded shortly after 10:00 a.m., prompted a significant emergency response, with Greek Police and EKAM teams mobilizing to secure the scene. While some managed to escape unharmed, the exact number of individuals present during the attack remains unclear. The severity of the situation was underscored by the dispatch of multiple ambulances to the area, emphasizing the urgency and gravity of the circumstances.

"I heard the gunshots, I heard the first two. I headed towards the stairs to see what was happening. I saw two guys coming down; they said, ‘It’s Aris with a gun, he’s shooting.’ Of course, I dashed outside, towards the garden, and made my way out through the back door of the garage," a witness, identified as a company worker, told local media.
