The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) and the European Federation of Inland Ports (EFIP) have made the Green Innovation Compass available on their websites. The online platform helps maritime and inland ports find practical solutions for greener and more efficient operations.
It brings together research, case studies and experience from port projects across Europe. The platform focuses on technologies that can help ports reduce emissions, improve efficiency and modernise their infrastructure.
Helping ports choose new technologies
The Green Innovation Compass was developed through MAGPIE, a European research project that brought together ports, companies, researchers and public authorities.
The platform covers electrification, alternative fuels, automation, digitalisation and resilience. It explains how different technologies work, where ports can use them and what they need before introducing them.
Ports can search for solutions based on their needs, priorities and project timelines. They can also explore examples from other European ports and learn from their experience.
The aim is to make information on port innovation easier to find and use. Rather than recommending one solution for every port, the platform helps users compare different options.
Encouraging cooperation between ports
ESPO and EFIP want the platform to support greater cooperation across Europe’s port sector. Both organisations believe that sharing experience can help ports overcome common challenges.
“The Green Innovation Compass allows for inland ports to see what projects others have already realised,” said Turi Fiorito, Director of EFIP.
Isabelle Ryckbost, Secretary General of ESPO, also encouraged ports to use the platform and share their knowledge.
The Green Innovation Compass will continue to expand as ports and other organisations contribute new projects and examples. The Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe (ALICE) will help maintain the platform after the MAGPIE project ends.
The platform is available at GreenInnovationCompass.eu.
