DP World confirms US$17 million investment in new Southampton driver facility

DP World has agreed to lease a 7,500 m² site next to its Southampton container terminal to establish state-of-the-art facilities for lorry drivers, as the UAE-based company continues its major investment programme in the United Kingdom.

DP World confirms US$17 million investment in new Southampton driver facility.

The US$17 million project will include driver welfare amenities such as a restaurant, showers, toilets, and 24-hour security, as well as expand the storage room for containers delivered by road and rail. The new driver facility is DP World's most recent investment in the UK, and it is anticipated to be fully operational this year.

DP World is establishing the facility to supplement the US$45 million it has invested in the resilience of its operations in Southampton since 2021, as well as to expand its capabilities across the supply chain.

“The new land will also free up valuable storage space to expand further our rail interconnectivity. Our investment in rail at both Southampton and London Gateway eases congestion on the roads, with 300,000 trucks taken off UK roads each year,” stated Ernst Schulze, UK chief executive at DP World.

The company has spent US$2.27 billion in the UK over the previous ten years, while it plans to invest another US$1 billion over the next decade, making it the company's largest investment outside of the Middle East.
