DNV and National Technical University of Athens have signed a new memorandum of understanding at Posidonia 2026 to strengthen cooperation in maritime research, education and innovation.
The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration across research, training, knowledge sharing and industry engagement for the Greek and international maritime sectors.
The partners plan to develop joint projects through separate agreements as the cooperation progresses.
Initial focus areas include advanced maritime technologies, clean energy systems, maritime training and academic-industry research partnerships.
The collaboration also aims to strengthen professional education by bringing practical shipping experience into academic programs.
“NTUA maintains a long-standing connection with Greek Shipping through our groundbreaking research and the education of generations of naval architects and marine engineers,” said Professor Ioannis Chatzigeorgiou, Rector of NTUA.
He said the agreement creates a platform where academic expertise and industrial experience can work together to address maritime decarbonization, digital transformation and safety challenges.
Jason Stefanatos, Global Decarbonization Director at DNV, highlighted the close relationship between Greek shipping and the university.
“A significant share of the Greek Shipowners’ ecosystem relies on the technical expertise of NTUA graduates,” he noted.
He added that combining NTUA’s academic capabilities with DNV’s classification expertise and operational experience will help support the long-term competitiveness of Greek shipping.
The partnership will also create opportunities for students, researchers and MSc candidates to work on practical engineering challenges, emerging technologies and evolving maritime regulations.
The agreement reflects increasing collaboration between industry and academia as shipping accelerates its transition toward cleaner and more digital operations.
