Descartes launches AI-powered image document management

Descartes Systems Group has announced new AI-powered Image Document Management capabilities designed to help customs brokers, freight forwarders and logistics service providers accelerate customs entry preparation and shipment creation.

The solution embeds logistics-trained AI agents directly into Descartes’ existing customs and transportation applications, transforming trade documents into operationally ready data while reducing manual data entry and improving processing efficiency.

The IDM solution interprets commercial invoices, bills of lading, packing lists and related shipment documents in context, extracting, validating and preparing data that can immediately initiate customs and transportation workflows with significantly fewer exceptions and manual corrections.

Unlike standalone AI document-processing solutions requiring separate applications, custom integrations or manual handoffs between systems, Descartes’ approach eliminates the need for operators to switch between multiple platforms, reducing implementation complexity and accelerating time-to-value.

Key benefits include reduced manual data entry through AI-enabled extraction and interpretation of trade documents, faster customs entry and shipment creation through operationally ready data preparation, more consistent processing across related shipment documents with fewer corrections, scalable document-processing capacity supporting business growth without proportional staffing increases, and straightforward AI adoption through capabilities embedded within existing Descartes solutions.

Scott Sangster, General Manager for Logistics Service Providers at Descartes, described commercial invoice data entry as one of the most labour-intensive activities in the import process, particularly for complex shipments with hundreds of line items, and highlighted the solution’s ability to process higher volumes with greater consistency and significantly less manual effort.

Ken Wood, Executive Vice President of Product Management at Descartes, emphasised that the goal extends beyond document reading to rapidly understanding logistics context and preparing the data needed to move customs entries and shipments forward faster and more accurately within the platform customers already use daily.
