DB Cargo UK has started a process to find a new owner as its parent company shifts its focus towards Central Europe.
The UK Management Board is looking for an owner that can provide additional capital and broader market opportunities. It also wants a partner with the scale needed to support the company’s future development.
Legal and financial advisers have already been appointed to support the process.
According to DB Cargo UK, the sale process has only just begun.
“We are confident that a sale represents the best route to securing the long-term growth, competitiveness and sustainability of the business,” said Andrea Rossi, CEO, DB Cargo UK.
DB Cargo AG shifts focus to Central Europe
The decision comes as DB Cargo AG changes its strategic priorities.
The parent company will increasingly focus on its core Central European operations. These operations are currently undergoing restructuring following the European Commission’s State Aid ruling.
Meanwhile, DB Cargo UK has been carrying out its own transformation programme.
The company said the programme has improved operational performance and financial efficiency in recent years.
However, external pressures have offset those improvements. According to the company, these factors have increased costs and affected key markets. They have also contributed to lower volumes and revenue.
Despite these challenges, DB Cargo UK remains positive about its future.
The company highlighted its market share and diverse customer base. It also pointed to its substantial asset base and extensive property portfolio.
Business continues as normal
DB Cargo UK said it will keep employees and trade union representatives informed throughout the process. Further updates will be provided when possible.
In the meantime, the business will continue to operate as normal.
DB Cargo UK describes itself as one of the UK’s leading rail freight operators. It provides rail and engineering services to customers across a range of sectors.
