CMA CGM will introduce a Low Water Surcharge (LWS) for shipments to and from Manaus, Brazil.
The carrier continues to monitor falling water levels across the Amazon River system. According to the latest forecast from the Manaus Port Captaincy, navigation restrictions will begin during week 40.
CMA CGM expects the restrictions to remain in place until at least week 52.
Reduced draft affects vessel capacity
Technical assessments indicate a significant reduction in navigable draft during the critical period.
Consequently, vessels will face lower transport capacity and reduced utilisation when sailing to and from Manaus.
The restrictions will also create additional operational costs. These include cargo handling, vessel allocation, route adjustments and additional pilotage fees.
Other costs may include administrative measures and the possible use of a floating pier.
Low Water Surcharge details
CMA CGM will apply a surcharge of US$753 per TEU.
The effective dates are:
- 6 September 2026 for cargo from all long-haul origins to Manaus
- 5 October 2026 for cargo from Manaus to all long-haul destinations
The surcharge will apply to all equipment types.
Possible surcharge revision
River conditions may require CMA CGM to use a floating pier for berthing, cargo handling or safe container transfers.
If this becomes necessary, the carrier will revise the surcharge to cover the related operational arrangements and third-party costs.
CMA CGM will continue to monitor water levels and inform customers about any changes.
