CMA CGM deploys world’s largest French-flagged LNG-powered containership

CMA CGM has deployed the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME, the world’s largest LNG-powered containership operating under the French flag.

The vessel began its maiden commercial voyage in Shanghai, China, before heading to Europe, where it will arrive in Le Havre in early July.

The CMA CGM NOTRE DAME is the first in a series of ten 24,212 TEU LNG-powered containerships that will operate under the French flag.

The vessel measures 400 meters in length, 62 meters in width and 75 meters in height.

CMA CGM deployed the ship on its French Asia Line (FAL), connecting Asia with Northern Europe through ports including Ningbo, Shanghai, Yantian, Singapore, Le Havre, Rotterdam, Hamburg and Tangier Med.

The company said the vessel combines LNG propulsion with advanced AI and digital navigation systems to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

The ship features a fully digitalized bridge with augmented reality navigation tools, 360-degree visualization systems and AI-powered route optimization technologies.

The vessel also includes smart energy-management systems and an 18,600 m³ LNG fuel tank designed for long-haul Asia-Europe operations.

CMA CGM said the ship can accommodate up to 1,600 reefer containers.

The company also optimized the vessel’s architecture to increase capacity by 280 additional containers without changing its dimensions.

“The CMA CGM NOTRE DAME embodies a new generation of LNG-powered containerships combining scale, performance and energy efficiency,” the company stated.

The vessel operates with a crew of around 30 seafarers under the command of Captain Nicolas Le Scornet.

CMA CGM plans to deliver the remaining nine vessels in the series between 2026 and 2028.
