SAAM orders second tug from ASENAV for fleet expansion plan

SAAM Towage has ordered a second tugboat from Chilean shipyard ASENAV as part of its fleet expansion and modernization strategy.

The new vessel follows another tug order placed earlier this year, further strengthening the partnership between the two companies.

The tug will be based on the Robert Allan RAstar 3200W design and will measure 32 meters in length.

It will deliver bollard pull of more than 80 tons and feature IMO Tier III-compliant propulsion systems.

The vessel will also include FF1 firefighting certification, Escort Tug certification and specialized safety equipment for LNG terminal operations.

SAAM said the new tug will support operations in Canada, one of the company’s key growth markets.

“This project allows us to continue building a modern, efficient and sustainable fleet capable of serving the most demanding markets,” said Hernán Gómez, CEO of SAAM.

ASENAV CEO Fernando Rodríguez said the partnership highlights the strength of Chile’s shipbuilding industry and supports the development of a more competitive maritime ecosystem.

The shipyard also noted that its ongoing Project 196 speculative build strategy allows it to respond faster to global tugboat demand.

SAAM Towage currently operates more than 200 tugboats across 12 countries in the Americas.
