ClassNK launches world’s first notation for ship construction carbon footprint

ClassNK has introduced the world’s first classification notation to verify the carbon footprint (CFP) generated during ship construction.

The new notation, a-EA (CFP), aims to improve transparency and support more accurate reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the maritime supply chain.

The notation confirms that the carbon footprint of a vessel’s construction has been calculated and independently verified by ClassNK in accordance with ISO 14067.

ClassNK has incorporated the notation into the latest edition of its Environmental Guidelines.

The initiative responds to growing demand for Scope 3 emissions reporting.

For shipowners and shipping companies, emissions generated during vessel construction fall under Scope 3 Category 2 (capital goods). However, these emissions often rely on standard emission factors rather than project-specific data.

ClassNK said the new notation allows emissions data to reflect actual shipbuilding practices. These include the use of low-carbon materials and measures to reduce emissions during construction.

The notation also gives shipyards an independent way to demonstrate their environmental performance.

Shipowners and cargo owners can use the verified data to improve the accuracy of their Scope 3 emissions disclosures.

ClassNK said the framework supports greater transparency while helping the industry meet growing sustainability reporting requirements.

The organisation added that it will continue developing standards and certification services to support the maritime industry’s decarbonisation efforts.
