ClassNK has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to a new 35,000 m³ LPG/ammonia carrier developed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI).
The vessel is designed to transport both LPG and ammonia. ClassNK presented the AiP certificate to HD HHI at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok on 17 September.
Design considers requirements at major terminals
HD HHI developed the vessel with the requirements of major gas terminals in mind, including terminals in Japan.
ClassNK reviewed the design under its rules for ships carrying liquefied gases in bulk. These rules incorporate the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk, known as the IGC Code.
The classification society issued the AiP after confirming that the design concept met the required standards.
The approval provides a technical basis for the concept as HD HHI continues to develop its gas carrier portfolio.
LPG and ammonia transportation
The ability to carry both LPG and ammonia gives the 35,000 m³ design flexibility across different gas trades.
Ammonia is also receiving increasing attention from the maritime industry as a potential alternative fuel. As a result, the ability to transport ammonia could become increasingly important as supply chains for the fuel develop.
HD HHI and ClassNK said they will continue working on technologies for the safe and efficient transportation of gas.
No vessel order, shipowner or construction schedule has been announced for the 35,000 m³ design.
