Swiss marine power company WinGD has completed type approval and factory acceptance testing for its X52-S2.0 engine, providing ship owners with a new option in compact, medium-bore two-stroke engines.
Testing at Yuchai Marine Power Co (YCMP) confirmed the engine’s performance and compliance, while the prototype project demonstrated ease of assembly and maintenance.
The X‑S series, which follows the established RT‑flex50 and RT‑flex58 engines, is available in 52cm and 62cm bore sizes. Orders have already been placed for diesel, LNG, and methanol configurations, with an ammonia fuel option currently under development.
The engine’s compact design and superior fuel efficiency—around 10g/kWh lower than comparable RT‑flex engines, resulting in approximately 4% savings depending on the operating profile—make it ideal for vessels needing a compact, medium-bore solution.

The X-S series exemplifies WinGD’s innovative approach to engine development, characterized by close collaboration with engine builders like YCMP and a focus on proven technologies.
Furthermore, key components are derived from robust supply chains established across WinGD’s engine portfolio. At the same time, modern engineering and design innovations reduce the size and footprint of the engine and simplify maintenance.
These tests followed the successful type approval tests for the larger X62-S2.0 engine at Dalian Marine Diesel in April. The first order for the X52-S2.0 was received in February 2023, with a second order, including WinGD’s on-engine NOx abatement solution iSCR, following in July.
