Another of Wan Hai Lines’ ships has become embroiled in a collision.
On 13 July, Wan Hai A02, which the Taiwanese liner operator took delivery from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in April, is believed to have collided with Vassos 2, a 2019-built 81,600 dwt bulk carrier owned by Greece’s Safe Bulkers, while on its way to Shekou, China.
The 13,200 TEU Wan Hai A02 is deployed on an Asia-US West Coast service and had just departed Tan Cang-Cai Mep International Terminal when the accident happened.
At the time, Vassos 2 was offloading cargoes at Interflour’s nearby terminal when its stern side was apparently hit by the port side of Wan Hai 02.
The impact is believed to have forced Vassos 2 into the wharf, causing damage to the facility.
The Vung Tau Port Authority promptly met with the port operator and the owners of the ships.
Wan Hai 02 was ordered to move to an anchorage outside the navigational area of the Vung Tau-Thi Vai channel. Buoys were placed around the ship to warn nearby vessels.
S&P Global’s vessel-tracking data shows that both Wan Hai 02 and Vassos 2 remain anchored in Vung Tau.
It is the second accident involving Wan Hai’s ships in three days. On 10 July, Wan Hai 312 was kept back in Kaohsiung port after hitting and damaging the revetment along berth 64. The ship was allowed to resume sailing on 13 July and arrived in Shantou, China, today (14 July).
