Vertom and Universal Africa Lines (UAL) have announced plans to form a strategic combination to strengthen their position in the maritime and logistics sector.
The two Dutch shipping companies said the proposed transaction will combine their complementary fleets, networks and expertise.
Vertom operates a fleet of more than 80 vessels and holds a strong position in the short-sea shipping market.
UAL specializes in transatlantic and West Africa trade lanes and has extensive experience in oil and gas logistics.
Under the proposed structure, both companies will continue operating under their existing brands and retain their individual identities.
At the same time, the partners plan to explore opportunities for closer cooperation across their services, customer base and shipping networks.
The combination will strengthen connections between Europe, the Caribbean, the U.S. Gulf, South America, West Africa and East Africa.
The companies also aim to build on UAL’s intra-African and Caribbean services.
The partnership is expected to improve fleet utilization, expand market access and enhance logistics services for breakbulk, container and project cargo customers.
Arjan de Jong, CEO of Vertom, said the combination will create a stronger platform by bringing together complementary fleets, networks and expertise.
He added that the partnership will broaden service offerings and support long-term business continuity.
Roger Jungblut, CEO of UAL, said both companies share a similar mindset and see strong alignment across their services and markets.
He said the combination will create opportunities to strengthen capabilities and deliver greater value to customers.
The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and other required procedures.
The companies expect to finalize the combination during the second half of 2026.
