
Container traffic at the Port of Tokyo increased in January, with total foreign-trade volumes reaching 337,038 TEUs, up 2% year-on-year, according to preliminary data from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
Loaded containers drove the growth. Volumes rose 3.7% to 245,991 TEUs. Empty containers declined 2.3% to 91,047 TEUs.
Export volumes showed strong growth. Loaded export containers reached 52,353 TEUs, up 24.4%. Empty export containers fell slightly by 1.1% to 90,414 TEUs.
Import volumes remained mixed. Loaded imports declined 0.7% to 193,638 TEUs. Empty imports dropped sharply by 63.2% to 633 TEUs.
Domestic container traffic also increased. Volumes reached 40,527 TEUs, up 14.5%.
Overall throughput included 263,084 TEUs of loaded containers, up 3.8%, and 114,482 TEUs of empty containers, up 2%.
The figures highlight steady growth in Tokyo’s container activity, supported by strong export performance despite softer import volumes.
