Taureana di Palmi Port redevelopment begins

The the completion of the docks at the Port of Taureana di Palmi has concluded, enabling a EUR 7.5 million project.

The Conference of Services for the completion of the docks at the Port of Taureana di Palmi has concluded, enabling a EUR 7.5 million project that will significantly expand the port’s capacity, improve recreational boating services and integrate environmental and landscape enhancements into the Costa Viola coastal context.

The project has been awarded to SILEM, Società Italiana Lavori Edili Marittimi, with construction scheduled to begin on November 3 and a duration of 20 months.

The agreement was signed by the Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, led by President Paolo Piacenza.

The project will complete the shoreside docks, making the entire perimeter of the port’s waterfront fully docked, expanding the available port area and increasing the number of berths while improving navigation safety within the basin.

Ground area works include paving of yards with porphyry slabs, construction of service infrastructure for safe port management, garages for nautical activities and facilities for boaters encompassing catering, nautical clubs, commercial services and restrooms.

The project aims to transform the port from a mooring facility into a space connecting the port, the city and the sea, enhancing the tourist appeal of the surrounding area.

Environmental sustainability has been given particular prominence.

Excavated and dredged materials will be reused to nourish a stretch of coastline north of the port, maximising resource efficiency and limiting disposal requirements while strengthening the relationship between infrastructure development and coastal protection.

New green areas will be created behind the caissons using native species consistent with the coastal environment, forming dune systems serving both environmental and landscape functions.

President Piacenza described the conclusion of the Services Conference as an important step in which infrastructural development and environmental protection proceed in tandem, with the dialogue between administrations and bodies producing a stronger environmental and landscape dimension that integrates the project seamlessly into the Costa Viola context.
