Suez Canal welcomes largest LNG-powered container ship CMA CGM GRAND PALAIS

The Suez Canal Authority has welcomed the first transit of the CMA CGM GRAND PALAIS, the world’s largest LNG-powered container vessel.

The ship passed through the canal on its maiden voyage, sailing from Singapore to Malta as part of a Mediterranean–Far East service operated by CMA CGM.

Largest LNG container ship

The vessel measures:

  • 400 meters in length
  • 61 meters beam
  • Capacity of 23,876 TEU
  • Tonnage of 240,000 tons

It is currently the largest container ship powered by LNG, reflecting the industry’s shift toward lower-emission vessels.

Strategic transit via Suez Canal

The ship joined the southern convoy after passing through the Bab el-Mandab Strait.

Officials said the transit highlights the canal’s ability to handle next-generation mega vessels and reinforces its role as a key global trade route.

Suez Canal Authority Chairman Ossama Rabiee said the successful passage demonstrates the canal’s operational readiness and supports more sustainable shipping by offering shorter routes and fuel savings.

Strong partnership with CMA CGM

Rabiee noted the long-standing cooperation with CMA CGM, whose vessels continue to rely on the canal despite regional challenges.

The ship’s captain also praised the canal’s navigation systems and pilot expertise, highlighting improvements in safety and operational efficiency for large vessels.

Supporting greener shipping

The transit underscores the growing role of LNG-powered ships in reducing emissions, aligning with environmental targets set by the International Maritime Organization.

The Suez Canal remains a critical corridor for global trade, particularly as shipping lines deploy larger and more environmentally advanced vessels.
