SSI, a major company in software, services, and expertise for the shipbuilding industry, has officially joined the OCX Consortium, marking a significant step toward facilitating the digital exchange of vessel design data for class approval.
Established to create a universal standard for data exchange, the OCX Consortium provides vessel designers and shipyards with a shared framework for presenting classification societies with 3D design data.
According to a statement, the adoption of a standardized OCX format streamlines the exchange of comprehensive data and documentation crucial for the verification and approval of asset designs before the construction phase.
“Using the OCX standard means designers using our ShipConstructor programme don’t have to figure out how to provide files and accompanying data to different class societies in different formats,” stated Craig Tulk, product business analyst of SSI.
In an era where vessel designers and shipyards are increasingly embracing digital tools for efficiency, SSI employs a Product Lifecycle Management approach within its software, covering the entire spectrum from initial concept to construction, including the development and delivery of digital twins.
“The advantages accrue equally to vessel designers and classification societies alike and we believe SSI users will immediately see the advantages in their workflows,” added Craig Tulk.
The OCX approach, by fostering conformity around data standards, simplifies the data exchange process between classification entities and designers. Moreover, it promotes the utilization of 3D data throughout the vessel’s lifecycle, aligning with the industry’s drive towards innovation.
Over the past six months, the OCX Consortium has gained momentum, attracting a diverse membership representing various stakeholders. This inclusive approach encourages collaboration essential for advancing the standard in the future. SSI’s longstanding commitment to a collaborative shipbuilding approach, characterized by open APIs, interoperability, and robust industry partnerships, aligns seamlessly with the consortium’s objectives.
“The OCX Consortium is delighted to welcome SSI to its collaborative community of industry leaders; its participation will add further weight to the use of common standards for the exchange of vessel design data,” explained Ole Christian Astrup, OCX Consortium coordinator, DNV.
SSI’s ShipConstructor, which already supports the creation of 3D vessel design models, will now offer the capability to export these models in a common file format. This advancement allows class personnel to leverage the OCX model for comprehensive assessments of design viability and adherence to class rules.
Ole Christian Astrup further added, “By harmonising its approach to digital vessel data using the OCX standard, SSI will be able to share the benefits directly with its clients and their stakeholders.”
