ProRail has awarded VolkerRail a contract to redevelop the Waalhaven Zuid rail yard at the Port of Rotterdam, increasing its capacity to handle longer freight trains.
The contract was signed on October 15, 2026. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2026 and continue until the end of 2028.
The project will improve rail freight operations at the port, supporting growing demand for cargo transport between Rotterdam and inland destinations.
Rail yard to accommodate 740-metre container trains
The redevelopment will provide six tracks capable of handling freight and container trains up to 740 metres long.
It will also add 12 locomotive parking spaces and upgrade the existing railway infrastructure, including further electrification.
ProRail plans to improve the separation of secured and unsecured areas. This will allow train movements and shunting operations to take place more safely and efficiently.
The project is expected to increase capacity at Waalhaven Zuid and improve its ability to handle growing freight volumes.
Freight operations to continue during construction
One of the main challenges is completing the redevelopment while keeping rail freight services running wherever possible.
Space at the rail yard is limited, and the project must meet technical, environmental and permitting requirements.
To address these challenges, ProRail has reached agreements with the Municipality of Rotterdam and the Port of Rotterdam Authority to secure temporary working space near the site.
ProRail and VolkerRail will now finalise the construction arrangements. Rail operators, shippers and other stakeholders will receive updates on the works and any expected disruption.
The project also receives financial support from the European Commission.
According to ProRail, the investment will help Waalhaven Zuid meet increasing demand for rail freight services to and from the Port of Rotterdam.
