Port of New York/New Jersey announces charging infrastructure project

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced a project to install electric ground support equipment charging infrastructure.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and LaGuardia Gateway Partners have announced a project to install electric ground support equipment charging infrastructure across Terminal B’s airside and baggage areas at LaGuardia Airport.

LGP will work with Conrac Solutions to design, construct, maintain and provide interim financing for the infrastructure, with completion anticipated in 2027.

The project will install 164 new eGSE charging ports across both terminal concourses and the baggage hall, more than doubling the existing charging capacity at the facility.

The transition from fossil fuel-powered ground support equipment to electric alternatives is a significant element of the Port Authority’s broader decarbonisation strategy, as such equipment accounts for approximately 4 percent of emissions attributable to the agency’s operational partners.

The initiative supports the Port Authority’s net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target for 2050, complementing a wider programme of emission reduction measures including increased electric vehicle adoption, building decarbonisation, solar expansion and clean construction strategies.

Preliminary data indicates the agency has met its interim target of a 35% reduction in direct greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, with longer-term goals of a 50% reduction by 2030 and full net-zero by 2050 remaining in place.

Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia described the eGSE transition as one of dozens of identified strategies for reducing emissions across the agency’s facilities.

LGP CEO Suzette Noble framed the project as a continuation of the sustainability priorities embedded throughout Terminal B’s redevelopment, addressing the operational needs of airline partners while advancing the terminal’s environmental commitments.

Joshua Blum, CEO of Conrac Solutions, described the project as a significant expansion of the company’s infrastructure capabilities beyond car rental facilities into specialised airport and airline operations.
