The Port of Gothenburg has signed a contract with Boskalis Sweden AB for blasting and dredging works forming part of the Skandia Gateway infrastructure project, valued at approximately EUR18 million.
The contract was awarded following a competitive tender process involving five contractors, with Boskalis selected on the basis of its experience and competence in comparable projects.
The works are central to deepening the fairway into the Port of Gothenburg from its current maximum vessel draught of 13.5 metres to 17.5 metres, enabling larger and deeper-draught vessels to call at Scandinavia’s largest port.
Construction is scheduled to take place during the next dredging season, running from October 2026 to March 2027.
Preparatory work on the project organisation will begin in the interim.
The dredging contract represents one of the final major milestones in the port’s contribution to Skandia Gateway, with the project remaining on schedule and within its previously communicated budget.
Since spring 2024, the port has carried out extensive quay reinforcement works at its container terminal as a prerequisite for the upcoming blasting and dredging activities.
Once the port’s works are complete, the Swedish Maritime Administration will assume responsibility for dredging the fairway outside the port area, from the port basin toward the entrance channel. These works are planned to begin in autumn 2027.
Skandia Gateway is a strategic collaboration between the Port of Gothenburg, the Swedish Maritime Administration and the Swedish Transport Administration, designed to secure Sweden’s long-term direct access to global shipping routes as vessel sizes continue to grow beyond the constraints of the current fairway depth.
