The Port of Gdańsk handled 20.9 million tonnes of cargo in the first quarter of 2026, a 13.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025, reinforcing its position as a leading transhipment hub and transport node in the Baltic Sea region.
The results were broad-based, with growth recorded across most major cargo segments and several recording exceptional year-on-year increases.
Container throughput reached 761,896 TEUs, a 22% increase, while container tonnage grew 17.2% to exceed 6.5 million tonnes.
Liquid fuels remained the dominant cargo category, accounting for 47.7% of total throughput at nearly 10 million tonnes, a 7 percent increase year-on-year.
The segment’s performance underpins the port’s strategic importance to Poland’s energy security. General cargo grew 15.7% to over 7.2 million tonnes, representing 34.6% of total throughput, with the container segment delivering particularly strong results.
Declines were recorded in other bulk cargo, down 11%, and RoRo traffic, down 29.6%.
Ferry passenger numbers fell 20.8%, attributable to seasonal factors and shifts in the road-sea transport mix.
Dorota Pyć, President of the Port of Gdańsk Authority, attributed the strong performance to well-planned investments that have built resilience against geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions, describing the port as a guarantor of supply stability and security for Poland.
She noted that record container growth reflects robust domestic demand and expanding export activity, and cautioned that while first-quarter results suggest the possibility of a record annual performance, a realistic assessment will only be possible in October or November once the majority of the year’s throughput data is available.
