Port Botany enjoys new ARMG cranes arrival

After three weeks at sea, the new Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (ZPMC) and Siemens Automated Rail Mounted Gantry (ARMG) cranes arrived onboard the Zhen Hua 36 into Port Botany on 21 March in the morning, according to Patrick Terminals.

The Australian container terminal operator has announced that weighing 450 tonnes each with a lifting capacity of 41 tonnes, these cranes signify a milestone in the jointly funded NSW Ports and Patrick Terminals US$190 million ‘on dock’ rail project.

The project includes an investment of US$120 million from NSW Ports to deliver ‘on-dock’ rail infrastructure and US$70 million from Patrick Terminals to deliver automated rail operating equipment at the Patrick Terminals – Sydney AutoStrad.

In a post on LinkedIn, Patrick Terminals said this project will provide increases in capacity for rail transportation to and from the Patrick Terminals facility, delivering improvements in turnaround times and operational efficiencies whilst reducing reliance on truck movements at the port. For every one million containers TEU handled on rail, there will be a reduction in 900 truck movements per day around the port reducing CO2 emissions and congestion, according to Patrick Terminals.
