AP Møller – Maersk and Duisport, a trimodal logistics hub, the largest in Europe, will co-operate to build and operate a new sales and logistics hub at the inland port.
The new hall is expected to be designed and completed in a short period of time, according to a carrier statement. As the contract negotiation is in the final stage, it has emerged that Maersk will take over an area of over 100,000m2 at Logport VI, while another 50,000m2 could be added at a later stage.
A trimodal logistics facility of the Logport family, including a container terminal, is being constructed on the 430,000m2 Logport VI area with a 500m long quay. After Logport I in Duisburg-Rheinhausen, the location in Walsum is the second largest project of Duisburger Hafen AG in the past 20 years.
“Our customers need more than pure transport services from port to port. By accompanying them from door to door along the entire transport chain, we create real added value for our customers and reduce the complexity of their supply chains,” said Jens-Ole Krenzien, vice president, North West Continent Area at Maersk.
Erich Staake, the chief executive officer of Duisburger Hafen AG, believes that Logport VI will offer long-term and sustainable competitive advantages.
“The new container terminal directly on the Rhine, with a direct connection to intermodal transport chains in the European hinterland, as well as to Asia, are advantages for competing internationally,” he noted. “The choice made by Maersk shows there is no getting around the Duisburg logistics hub for the big players in the industry.”
The Danish shipping company has also mentioned that the project will entail the creation of over 350 new jobs, while Staake stated that they will exceed this forecast with the Maersk settlement and other investors acquired.
“Once the contract has been signed and all necessary permits have been received, Maersk will develop a large distribution and warehouse complex in two phases,” Staake explains.
“The location will serve as an additional decoupling point in our customers’ supply chain. The commitment to Logport VI is in line with our strategy of enabling integrated logistics solutions for our customers worldwide,” added Jens-Ole Krenzien.
