Maersk reveals 2020 network for New Zealand – Asia market

Maersk continues to tailor its New Zealand service network to deliver efficiencies throughout the supply chain whilst also supporting its customers’ business growth and changing demand requirements. The Danish company will be adjusting its service offering for New Zealand market in 2020 and look forward to continue to connect your cargo between New Zealand and the rest of the world.

Southern Star service:

  • To improve schedule reliability Maersk will be introducing a 7th vessel to the weekly Southern Star service
  • Port of Timaru will be added as a permanent port call on the Southern Star service rotation to offer Maersk’s customers a direct connection between Asia and the Port of Timaru
  • The new rotation of the Maersk Southern Star service will be: Tanjung Pelepas > Singapore > Brisbane > Sydney > Tauranga > Napier > Lyttelton > Timaru > Lyttelton > Port Chalmers > Tanjung Pelepas

Triple Star service Northbound:

  • Maersk’s current Seasonal Triple Star service will be replaced by reintroducing Port of Tauranga to its weekly West Coast Latin America – Asia service.
  • The new rotation of the Triple Star service will be: Tauranga > Hong Kong > Shekou > Ningbo > Shanghai > Qingdao > Busan > Yokohama > Manzanillo > Lazaro Cardenas > Balboa  > Buenaventura > Callao > Iquique > San Vicente > San Antonio > Tauranga

Triple Star Service Southbound:

  • Port of Tauranga will not be re-introduced to Asia – West Coast Latin America service in 2020
  • Import cargo from Asia to New Zealand will continue to be routed on the Southern Star
  • Export cargo from New Zealand to West Coast Latin America will continue to be routed on OC1 service

How will your cargo be affected?

Services between North East Asia and New Zealand 

  • New Zealand Imports from North East Asia: Cargo will be loaded either on a J-Star service in North East Asia or a Southern star service via South East Asia transshipment
  • New Zealand Exports to North East Asia: Export Cargo from New Zealand to North East Asia will connect in Tauranga for direct loading on the Triple Star service. Any onward connection to destinations across North Asia will be routed via Hong Kong or Shanghai

Services between between West Coast Latin America and New Zealand

  • New Zealand Imports from West Coast Latin America: New Zealand import cargo from West Coast Latin America will load directly on the WCSA-ASI service and will be discharged in Tauranga for further delivery to final destination.

Revised Transit times due to introduction of 7th vessel on the Southern Star service

  • The schedule changes will naturally mean some adjustment to the timings of Maersk’s port calls and transit times.

When will the change take effect?

The last call in Tauranga on the current Triple Star service will be as follows:

  • The last import voyage to call Tauranga will be the JPO PISCES / 001S departing Shanghai on the 5th of January. Cargo booked on the later sailings will be re-routed to alternative services.
  • The last export voyage to call Tauranga, prior to schedule adjustment will be the JPO PISCES / 001S departing Tauranga on the 22nd of January.

The first re-introduced Northbound Triple Star call in Tauranga:

  • The first export voyage from West Coast South America- Asia to call Tauranga will be in week 5, 2020.

The first Southern Star call in Timaru:

  • The first Southern Star port call in Timaru is expected mid-late February. The company will confirm exact timing shortly.

Revised cargo cut-offs and Transit times

  • Maersk is working through the cargo cut offs and transit time impacts and will confirm exact details shortly.
