Korean Register (KR) has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to a new 50,000-cbm LPG carrier developed with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI).
The design introduces a new capacity option between the established 45,000-cbm and 60,000-cbm LPG carrier classes. KR presented the approval to HD HHI at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok on 16 September.
New size for mid-size LPG trades
HD HHI developed the concept and basic design, while KR reviewed the vessel against international standards and gas carrier regulations.
The vessel features independent Type-A tanks for the storage and transportation of LPG. According to HD HHI, the 50,000-cbm capacity is designed to provide more flexibility for different cargo volumes and trading patterns.
The shipbuilder sees growing opportunities for mid-size LPG carriers as global LPG trade expands and shipping routes become more diverse.
“Rising LPG trade volumes and increasingly diverse shipping routes have fueled growing interest in mid-size LPG carriers,” said Hong-ryul Ryu, Senior Executive Vice President and CTO of HD HHI.
He added that the new design aims to combine efficiency with access to a wider range of ports.
KR completes design review
KR reviewed the concept for safety and compliance before granting the AiP.
The classification society said the project provides a technical foundation for the development of new vessels targeting the mid-size LPG carrier market.
At this stage, the companies have not announced a construction order, shipowner or delivery schedule for the design.
