Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has come into an agreement with Dublin Ferryport Terminals (DFT) to provide the Irish terminal with five new auto-radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTG) cranes that are scheduled to be delivered over the next two years.
The Kalmar’s machines order reflects the ongoing investment of the DFT company to equip Dublin’s port terminal with technologies that will support future growth.
The current Kalmar AutoRTG system at DFT comprises four Kalmar AutoRTG cranes with features such as fully automated stack operation and remote-controlled truck handling, controlled via three remote control desks, according to an announcement.
All service, maintenance and technical support are provided by the Finnish manufacturer, which said “the solution’s access control system ensures that personnel cannot access the area where the cranes operate until it is safe.”
Furthermore, the Kalmar AutoRTG application, powered by the Kalmar One automation system, allows terminal operators to automate their operations at their own pace based on predefined AutoRTG blueprints.
According to a statement, Kalmar One offers highly developed traffic management and optimisation functions as part of its Fleet Management product family, and for example at DFT, the solution enables the customer to manage its container inventory capabilities.
Container Terminal Director at Dublin Ferryport Terminals, Alec Colvin noted that the port expects to improve terminal safety and efficiency across the operations in Ireland with the new cranes.
“Throughout our long-term partnership, Kalmar has proven their commitment and expertise in delivering terminal automation technologies, so it was only natural for us to turn to them when it came time to further extend our AutoRTG system at Dublin Port,” commented Colvin.
