Kalmar expands Shanghai plant to boost production capacity

Kalmar's Shanghai manufacturing plant

Kalmar has expanded its manufacturing plant in Shanghai to improve operational efficiency and increase production capacity.

The expansion was completed in May 2026 and will support future growth, including electric vehicle equipment assembly.

Kalmar said the new space centralizes post-assembly operations and improves flexibility for production scaling.

The Shanghai facility manufactures reachstackers, forklift trucks, empty container handlers and terminal tractors for customers across Asia-Pacific, Africa, South America, Oceania and the Middle East.

Opened in 2005, the plant is strategically located near one of the world’s busiest ports and connected to major inland waterway and rail networks in China.

“The new space provides the necessary layout to handle the specific assembly and testing requirements of our electric range,” said John Zhang, Managing Director of Kalmar’s Shanghai plant.

Kalmar added that the expansion will help meet rising global demand for sustainable material handling equipment.

“The Shanghai plant is a vital part of our global manufacturing network,” said Alf-Gunnar Karlgren, President, Counter Balanced, Kalmar.
