Kalmar, part of Cargotec, is to deliver two rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) to EUROGATE, Europe’s leading shipping line-independent container terminal operator, for use in their Tanger S.A. terminal in Morocco. The order was booked in Cargotec’s 2018 Q3 order intake, with delivery scheduled to take place during Q3 of 2019.
The EUROGATE Tanger container terminal is conveniently located on the Strait of Gibraltar in Morocco, making it the ideal transhipment hub for the western Mediterranean, Africa and South America. With a quay length of 812 m, a terminal area of 400,000 m² and a water depth of up to 18 m, the facility is well-equipped to handle the new generation of container ships. All RTGs currently operating at the terminal have been supplied by Kalmar.
The Kalmar Classic RTG combines the best of diesel and electric technology to enable fuel savings, low emissions and easy maintenance. At 1,000 hours, it has one of the longest maintenance intervals in the industry, while its modular design makes it easy to tailor according to customer-specific requirements.
The cranes delivered to EUROGATE Tanger will be 7+1 rows wide and 1-over-5 high, with a lifting capacity of 50 tons under the spreader. They will be fitted with the Kalmar SmartRail automated gantry steering solution with Container Position Indication (CPI), which automatically controls the gantry steering and feeds container coordinates to the Terminal Operating System. They will also feature Kalmar SmartFleet – a process automation solution that improves operational transparency and reduces downtime through remote equipment monitoring and reporting.
Andrea Cervia, CEO, EUROGATE Tanger S.A.: “Kalmar RTGs have been the backbone of our operations for many years already, so it was a natural step to turn to Kalmar once again when it came to expanding our existing fleet. We appreciate Kalmar for their innovative technical solutions and we are sure to continue together to increase the terminal performance and reliability.”
Ilkka Annala, Vice President, Intelligent Crane Solutions, Kalmar: “We have enjoyed a very successful long-term relationship with EUROGATE Tanger, and we are very pleased that they have once again chosen our safe, reliable and fuel-efficient RTG solutions to support operations at the terminal.”
