Nasdaq-listed shipping company Icon Energy has agreed to acquire a minority interest in a company owning a 1,800 TEU ECO containership, marking a further expansion of its investments in the container shipping sector.
The vessel, built in 2023, is currently employed under a fixed-rate time charter with a major container shipping operator. The agreement provides for a daily charter rate of US$24,750, with the minimum charter period extending through February 2028.
The containership is expected to generate approximately US$12 million in minimum contracted charter revenue over the remaining employment period. This amount represents revenue associated with the vessel rather than income directly attributable to Icon Energy’s proposed ownership stake.
Minority investment subject to closing conditions
Under the proposed transaction, Icon Energy will acquire a 2.8% minority interest in the vessel-owning company. Completion is expected by the end of October 2026, subject to the execution of definitive documentation and customary closing conditions.
The company has not disclosed the financial consideration associated with the acquisition.
The investment follows Icon Energy’s earlier entry into the containership segment through a 4.6% minority interest in a separate vessel-owning company.
That investment involves a 2,000 TEU feeder containership built in 2008, which is employed under a time charter generating US$26,500 per day. The minimum charter period for that vessel extends through June 2028.
The latest agreement would add exposure to a newer-generation feeder containership alongside the company’s existing shipping investments, although the transaction has not yet been completed.
