Hambantota International Port (HIP) has set a new container handling record with the vessel MSC Marie Leslie. The milestone highlights the port’s growing role as a regional hub.

The ship, operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company, called at the port from April 11 to 15, 2026. During this time, HIP completed 7,968 container moves. Total volume reached 13,260 TEUs, the highest ever for a single vessel at the port.

The new record exceeds earlier results. HIP handled 12,957 TEUs on MSC Ilenia and 11,369 TEUs on MSC Ruby in March. The figures show steady growth in container operations.

Port officials said the result reflects strong operational performance. Teams across operations, engineering, safety, and navigation worked together to manage the high-volume call.

“This achievement reflects the coordination and capability of our teams,” said Tommy Yang, COO of Hambantota International Port Group. “We remain focused on safe, efficient, and reliable services as volumes grow.”

External partners also supported the operation. They helped maintain high productivity under demanding conditions.

HIP sits just 10 nautical miles from the main East–West shipping route. The port continues to expand its container handling capacity. It aims to meet rising demand and adapt to changing global trade patterns.

The successful call of MSC Marie Leslie strengthens HIP’s position in the regional logistics network. It also confirms its ability to handle larger volumes efficiently.
