Georgia Ports secures Army Corps permit for Savannah Container Terminal

Georgia Ports Authority has announced that the US Army Corps of Engineers has approved the permit for the Savannah Container Terminal.

Georgia Ports Authority has announced that the US Army Corps of Engineers has approved the permit for the Savannah Container Terminal following a three-year review process, with the announcement made by President Kevin Price at the annual State of the Port of Savannah event.

Construction on the new terminal is scheduled to begin in January 2028, with completion anticipated in the mid-2030s.

The USD 2.3 billion Savannah Container Terminal will be located on Hutchison Island in Savannah, covering 350 acres and capable of handling the largest container ships.

The facility will add 3.5 million TEUs of capacity, taking Savannah’s total capacity from its current 7.75 million TEUs toward the port’s long-term target of a 12 million TEU gateway container port.

The terminal development is part of Georgia Ports’ US$ 5 billion infrastructure investment programme, described by GPA Chairman Alec Poitevint as the largest in the nation, building on the US$ 4.13 billion invested in port and inland infrastructure over the preceding decade.

The Savannah Container Terminal announcement was accompanied by the disclosure that CEO Griff Lynch will retire on August 1, 2027, after 16 years with Georgia Ports.

During his tenure spanning roles as Chief Operating Officer from 2011 and CEO, revenues have increased 213%, container volumes are up 90% and RoRo volumes have grown 60%.

Lynch attributed the port’s trajectory to talented employees, a supportive board and the partnership of state government and agencies under Governor Kemp and the Georgia Legislature.

The terminal permit follows other major ongoing investments, including the US$ 1.6 billion upgrade of Ocean Terminal from 200,000 TEUs to 1.75 million TEUs capacity, expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
