Fincantieri and Teijin partner on composite bulkheads for ships

Fincantieri and Teijin Automotive Technologies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop advanced composite bulkheads for maritime vessels.

The agreement focuses on engineering non-structural composite bulkheads designed to reduce vessel weight and improve operational efficiency.

Teijin Automotive Technologies will lead engineering and industrialization activities with support from Fincantieri.

The bulkheads will use an advanced composite material patented by Aeronautical Service.

Fincantieri said the material has already received non-combustibility certification required for onboard maritime applications.

The company is already working with Aeronautical Service on the wider adoption of carbon-based composites in civil and military shipbuilding.

“This agreement confirms our role as a pioneer in driving the evolution of shipbuilding towards the best available technologies and high-performance solutions beyond steel,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri.

He added that advanced materials will support lighter vessels, improved performance and new ship design possibilities.

Uwe Brinkmann, General Manager of Teijin Automotive Technologies Europe, said the partnership aims to improve safety, sustainability and innovation in shipbuilding.

Fincantieri said the agreement supports its long-term strategy to expand the use of advanced materials across its shipbuilding portfolio.
