EDECS Group has secured a contract from DP World to redevelop seven operational yards at Terminal 1 of Dar es Salaam Port in Tanzania.
The yards cover a combined area of 90,000 m². Construction work is already underway.
The project expands the existing partnership between EDECS and DP World.
Seven cargo yards to be redeveloped
EDECS will design and construct seven dedicated cargo and material handling yards.
The scope also includes associated gates and supporting utilities.
In addition, the project will provide infrastructure to support advanced digital yard management systems. EDECS will also upgrade cargo storage and handling facilities.
The company is implementing a port-wide fire protection network. This will cover the entire port, including areas outside the original project scope.
A high-mast lighting system will also be installed across the port. It aims to improve safety, security and operational efficiency.
Dar es Salaam container volumes rise
Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s largest and busiest port. According to EDECS, it handles more than 90% of the country’s international maritime trade.
The port also serves as a key maritime gateway for seven landlocked countries across East and Central Africa.
Annual throughput has now surpassed 30 million tonnes.
Meanwhile, Terminal 1 handled 46,582 TEUs in July 2026, its highest monthly container volume to date.
That compares with 13,779 TEUs in May 2024, which EDECS used as the starting benchmark for the terminal’s transformation.
DP World highlights modernization programme
Martin Jacob, CEO of DP World Dar es Salaam, said the modernization remains central to improving trade connectivity and logistics efficiency across East and Central Africa.
“Building on our relationship with EDECS Group, we are pleased to recognize the speed of execution in civil work,” he said.
Hussein El Dessouky, Chairman and Managing Director of EDECS Group, said work is progressing across the project’s main operational areas.
“As Dar es Salaam continues to strengthen its role as one of the region’s most important maritime gateways, EDECS is proud to contribute to a project that advances trade connectivity, supports economic growth, and aligns with Tanzania’s long-term national development goals,” he said.
The project forms part of EDECS Group’s wider portfolio of marine, port and logistics infrastructure projects across the Middle East and Africa.
