DP World and Mundra drive significant GDP impact

Independent research commissioned by DP World has quantified the economic contribution of the Mundra International Container Terminal.

Independent research commissioned by DP World and conducted by Oxford Economics has quantified the economic contribution of the Mundra International Container Terminal and projected its long-term impact on India’s trade ecosystem and regional economy.

The findings highlight MICT’s role as a critical gateway for containerised trade since its commissioning in 2003 as India’s first greenfield container terminal within a non-major port.

The terminal has handled more than 19 million containers to date, including 1.4 million TEU in 2024, connecting India to 73 global ports and accommodating ultra-large container vessels of up to 19,200 TEU.

Multimodal rail connectivity extends the terminal’s reach across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Delhi, supporting supply chain efficiency for industrial and consumption centres across western and northern India.

In 2024, MICT contributed USD 128.9 million to India’s GDP, of which US$ 118.8 million was generated within Gujarat. The terminal supported approximately 1,880 jobs nationwide, including 1,240 in Gujarat, across logistics, transportation, manufacturing, retail and services.

Looking ahead, enhanced shipping connectivity through MICT is forecast to drive an additional USD 6.4 billion in exports and a US$ 9.2 billion GDP impact by 2035.

The research also highlights the terminal’s workforce profile. Nearly one in four jobs associated with the terminal are held by women, and approximately 10 percent of employees are under the age of 25, reflecting growing inclusion and youth participation in a traditionally male-dominated sector.

Hemant Kumar Ruia, Country Manager of DP World Subcontinent, described infrastructure built for scale, efficiency and connectivity as a powerful driver of both economic growth and social progress, framing MICT’s contribution as extending well beyond port operations into employment creation, skills development and community opportunity across Gujarat and India more broadly.
