DCSA expands Track & Trace standard to IoT and reefer containers

The Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) has released Track & Trace 3.0.0, expanding its container visibility standard to include IoT and reefer events.

The new version builds on Track & Trace 2.2.0, which covers shipment, transport and equipment events. With the update, the standard can also handle data generated by connected containers and refrigerated equipment.

DCSA said the changes respond to growing demand for more consistent smart container data across the supply chain.

New visibility for connected and reefer containers

Track & Trace 3.0.0 introduces two new event types: IoT events and reefer events.

IoT events include information such as container geolocation, geofence crossings and door status. Meanwhile, reefer events cover temperature readings, setpoint adjustments, power status and alarms.

The update aims to create a common format for exchanging this information. As a result, carriers, terminals, inland operators, freight forwarders and technology providers can use the same framework when sharing container visibility data.

“Extending it to connected containers and refrigerated cargo reflects DCSA’s broader push to digitalise container shipping end to end, giving the industry a wider, more consistent view of a shipment as it moves,” said Iker Echave, Head of Standards, DCSA.

DCSA improves event corrections

Beyond IoT and reefer data, the new version improves how changes to shipments and related documents are represented.

It also introduces clearer ways to communicate corrected or withdrawn events. In addition, the standard supports the exchange of events through carriers, digital platforms and other intermediaries.

According to DCSA, experience with Track & Trace 2.2.0 highlighted the need for these changes. Feedback from carriers, technology providers and users also helped shape the new version.

Organisations currently using Track & Trace 2.2.0 will need to migrate to the new standard. DCSA has therefore released a migration guide with comparisons, value mappings and implementation guidance.

Initially, Track & Trace 3.0.0 will be available to DCSA members and DCSA+ partners. DCSA plans to make the standard publicly available during the second half of 2027.
