CSP Iberian Bilbao Terminal adds new STS crane to boost capacity

CSP Iberian Bilbao Terminal has taken delivery of a new Super Post-Panamax ship-to-shore (STS) crane. The investment increases capacity at the Port of Bilbao and improves operational efficiency.

The crane is the largest of its kind in the Atlantic Arc. It will enter service in June 2026. It features advanced and energy-efficient technology for safer and more precise operations.

The crane can lift up to 83 tonnes under wire rope. It supports 65-tonne twin-lift operations. It can reach 20 container rows and has a lifting height of 56 metres. The unit weighs around 1,300 tonnes. It includes anti-collision systems and cameras to support safe handling.

CSP Iberian Bilbao Terminal invested €10 million in the crane. ZPMC, a global leader in port crane manufacturing, built the equipment. The company finalized the purchase in October 2024.

This investment follows a long-term strategy launched in 2016. It aligns with the extension of the terminal’s concession until 2049.

The new crane complements earlier upgrades. In 2023, the terminal invested €12.6 million in six hybrid RTG cranes to improve yard operations.

CSP said the investment strengthens the terminal’s role in the Atlantic region. The facility supports connections between southern Europe and major northern European ports through intermodal solutions.
