COSCO to serve Port of La Spezia via 20,000 TEU vessels

COSCO Shipping is scheduling regular visits to the Port of La Spezia with 20,000 TEU vessels. The imminent arrival of the COSCO Shipping Aries marks the first docking of such a large container ship from the Chinese liner at the Italian port.

Beginning in March, COSCO 20,000 TEU container ships will establish a consistent presence at the Port of La Spezia. This recent announcement by the Chinese liner reveals plans to incorporate four units of these vessels into the Asia Mediterranean Service (AEM1) rotation.

Each ship boasts an impressive length of approximately 400 meters. This strategic decision reflects the evolving landscape of maritime transport, as the industry adapts to new norms and requirements, including the necessity to navigate around Africa.

Consequently, two new independent loops will be introduced in the Mediterranean, accommodating the deployment of larger-capacity container ships.

"We are proud and ready to welcome the COSCO SHIPPING Aries, the first in a series of ultra-large container vessels deployed in the AEM1 (MED1) service operated by the Chinese carrier within the Ocean Alliance. Our terminal has already demonstrated its ability to handle operationally this type of container ship, thus reaffirming our commitment to meeting every need and delivering the service excellence that our customers expect," stated Matteo Ferrando, key account manager at Contship Italia.
